Common DIY Install Issues

We receive phone calls on a regular basis from people who have purchased their gates online or maybe just the automation equipment and the most common problem, apart from low quality products, is the incompatibility of the gates and the equipment leading to operating issues.

Any entrance gate needs to be manufactured in a way to enable the forces of automation to be applied without damage. A cheap aluminum or timber gate can be bent, split or ripped apart if it is low quality build or doesn’t have the strength where the automation equipment is attached.

Medium to large entrance swing gates of a more solid design will be subjected to the forces of wind and if the automation equipment is low quality or more commonly not powerful enough for the gate weight and forces, then quite simply your gates won’t operate in windy conditions. We see this problem all the time.

Difficult to fix and usually the automation equipment will all need changing and upgrading.

THE BIGGEST FAIL!!

The single biggest and most unbelievable issue we come across way too often are electric swing and sliding gates which haven’t been installed with the mandatory safety equipment to comply with UK basic regulations and law.
Electric gates can seriously injure or kill people and especially children who are more fascinated by the ‘magic’ gates when they move to open or close. There are multiple crush zones on an average electric gate and the larger they are the greater that crushing potential can be With a sliding gate of course the issue can be crushing but also worse with an open gate design giving rise to an entrapment zone which has terrine potential consequences.

Basic safety detection systems are a legal and mandatory requirement on remote control electric gates in the UK, let alone common sense anyway. Infra red beams might cover one part of a gate but most gates also require obstacle detection rubber strips on the leading edges and entrapment points and protect the rear area with additional safety beam  or induction loop

Whilst looking at entrance gates online you may think you can achieve your dream electric gates from half the price of a professional company installing them, the truth is very different once you add up all the missing elements and potential to focus purely on the price and not the specification and quality for a product which will be outside all year round and exposed to all the elements the British climate has to throw at it.
